Recently I have been drawn to the colors shining through stained glass; the colors found in the shadow enriched by other colors around them; and also the colors on the skins of various matured gourds. They give me a sensation like a tiny piece of butter melting on the tip of the tongue—mild, rich, penetrating and long lasting.

To master the technique of visualizing these colors is one thing, to integrate this with abstract images and emotions into a balanced composition, however, is another—it is like mixing many different chemicals into a tube, the reactions between them are often beyond my control and often cause great distress. Responding to these unpredictable pictorial problems, is a journey to the unknown, full of risk-taking, conquering and fulfillment. This painting experience is very much like the experience of encountering one’s life events, and it is one of the many reasons why I paint.
