Biography



Hua Nian is a Chinese-born artist and educator whose professional background bridges photojournalism, art education, and studio practice. Before relocating to the United States, she taught photojournalism at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. She later earned a Master of Arts in Art Education from Pittsburg State University in Kansas.

Now based in Champaign–Urbana, Illinois, Hua Nian is an active exhibiting artist and art instructor who teaches children and adults in her private studio.

Her artwork is widely collected throughout the United States and has received numerous awards at various exhibitions and art events. Her work has been featured and discussed in American Artist Magazine, the Chicago Sun-TimesDialogue: An Art Journal, and many local newspapers and magazines. In addition, her paintings have been commissioned and reproduced as cover imagery for books, music CDs, and posters by institutions including Stanford University and University of Illinois. Most recently, her artwork was featured on a newly released album by the Jupiter String Quartet.

She is married to composer Stephen Taylor, and together they have two adult children engaged in scientific research focused on bees and birds.
